The Move and 30 scorpions
Today is July 28th and we have been in our new home since July 8th. Things have not gone as planned but we are grateful to be here. I would not recommend to anyone having to go on a vacation and pack for 8 the day after you move 3 semi truckloads and several car loads to a new home. We still are not completely out of the Ray Lane house. We have the laundry room shelves, the garage and the decorations in the attic yet to go. With that in mind, I would say that for being gone for 8 days of the 20 we've been here, we are doing pretty good. I helped finish Brookly's room last night and Josh's room the day before. Most of my room is done and the kitchen. The bookshelves in the living room and upstairs are done. So there is lots of progress in between the absolute chaos of getting 6 kids enrolled in school, outfitted for school, physical therapy twice a week for my back, loads of boxes to the recycle place, loads of junk back from the other house, cleaning the other house, kids appointments, tons of organizing and changing of address and info, new ward split on Sunday, and did I mention that our church records are lost for the last year!!!
Dallin, Josh and Brennen are missing their last ordinations and Jarom isn't recorded as being baptized. This is a major problem. Technically the boys shouldn't bless or pass sacrament if they aren't ordained. We don't have certificates to prove this and aren't sure we received any. Looks like we have to get signed sworn letters from 2 witnesses for each ordination to prove they happened at all. Oh, the joys! Adventures abound as we get little sleep and work constantly on both houses.
The day we moved in we found 3 scorpions in the garage. This freaked me out since in 19 years of marriage I've only seen one that was quite small at our old house. Come to find out they are the very venomous bark scorpions. This didn't settle my mind at all. We saw many roaches and crickets and knew what they were eating. The first night in our home Dallin and Josh were in the garage getting something and Dallin felt a web on his leg. Yes, black widow and all her glory was already atached to the sleeping bags in the garage that we had to take to Utah the next day. We've now officially killed 2 black widows, 4 scorpions in the garage, 1 in the hallway inside, 11 in our yard and 12 in the green belt behind our house. Wes makes a nightly scorpion hunt with the black light and only found 1 the last 2 nights. They are subsiding. We had our home sprayed the day after we moved in but it was vacant for a year or so before. All sorts of creatures claimed our home and needed kicked out! When Brookly almost stepped on the one inside in her bare feet when she got up in the morning I promptly went to buy scorpion spray. I found the good stuff that kills on contact and keeps killing them. We smash the ones we see but spray the ones too high on the walls. Truthfully I can't think about it too much or I couldn't sleep here ever.
Update on July 30th... Last night we didn't find any but today there was one in our laundry room light dead this morning and Wes just killed another in back yard. Yep, 30 scorpions! Becoming more scarce all the time. We hope to wipe them out for good:) Now some of those are in the greenbelt behind our house but could come into our yard so Wes does nightly scorpion hunts and the boys join him. He's in the greenbelt now...
I talked with Bishop Peterson and they are going to pull our records back into Ocotillo Ward, straighten it all out since I know the dates and who did the ordinances, and then send the records back to Vineyard Ward. We'll then have certificates to prove the ordinances and it should all work out. Whew! Even though I knew they were ordained it was stressful to think of this whole mess.
Tonight we went to a game night with several couples from the ward and had a great time and met the parents of several of the teenagers in the ward. The boys got home while we were there and are going to talk Josh into doing Marching Band with them. I think he'll love that! I'm going to stop here and do another post for the other events of the move as I have time.

The Fun Begins
So every day I'm doing a hundred things for this new house. Yesterday there were some stumbling blocks and I just keep praying they all work out since we know this is right. The major one was that our money for the down payment was delayed 5 days because when I sent the forms last week overnight and paid for them to express 2 day it back to us they snail mailed us a letter saying they needed more info!! We received it Tues and began the process of getting here here to deposit so it can be released and then wired to title at least 24 hrs before closing. What a nightmare! It did work out and this morning they finally processed it and it should arrive tomorrow morning so I can deposit it and meet with the bank manager to get it released sooner.
Next hurdle. Schools! Legacy Traditional is what we've heard raved about by those with their kids there, so we are still wating to hear if there will be another 6th grade class open up for Brookly and even if our boys are off the waiting list that's shorter to begin with for them yet.
I took Josh down to look at the High Schools. Queen Creek was his first choice and we went to the office. The lady there was very curt and rude. She informed us that we are out of district and we can bring in the form but we won't know for another month whether there is room when she sees the numbers from the students who are "in district" first. School starts there July 27th. So that's a week before school starts that we'd know and he'd miss Freshman Orientation. She was no help for what to do about Marching Band and we left rather disappointed. We decided to try Poston Butte, the new high school that we had heard good things about from one of the ladies leaving a house we looked at. Her son loved it and thought highly of it. Queen Creek is only 2 miles from our house. Poston Butte is a little drive 9.7 miles South of our home. Now we aren't sure what to do. There was noone at Poston Butte in the office. The maintenance guy said they'd be back Mon. We could also send Josh with his friend from years ago, Greg Ferguson, to Higley High also about 10 miles into Gilbert. So another dilemma.
Keep praying the right choice for him works out.
Today there were some blessings and some set backs. Usual for this process I'm sure. I just finished a letter to the loan processor to find out why our Good Faith Estimate has our interest rate at 5% when prime is 4.5% today. I hope he can help lower some of the closing costs. Always good to make him work for his money right. We did find out that the seller will help split the difference in the appraisal and selling price. We also sent our inspection letter for the 10th day of inspection was today. We hope they pay for a few of the things on the list but they were minor and not critical to buying the house. I forgot how much stress is involved in any loan.
Josh and I made a good box run to Fry's. We got quite a few produce boxes:) Yea!!! It will happen!

Boxed up for Father's Day
Can anyone beat Grammy in an arm wrestle?
What a wonderful Father's Day!
We didn't have Wes here and that was pretty sad but we had my Dad here for the first time in years on a Father's Day! I love you Dad! You are my hero!
Dallin has made many late night and early morning trips to get us boxes by the hundreds!
Our home is becoming overrun quickly!
It is a shame Wes has to miss all this:)
We had Greg's family come out since Grampy was in town and here's all the Sheppard
grandkids in the valley of the sun:)
1st Glimpse of New Home
Grammy and Grampy came to see our new house when I took the kids for the first time.

Goodbye is never easy
Leah with Brookly, Ben, Jarom and I
The last time climbing Leah's tree
Leah Pittman has been a dear friend and neighbor for several years and she's come to events and watched our kids grow. Her husband, Richard, died last year and she decided she had to sell the house and move back East closer to her kids. We loved taking care of her and having her join us frequently for meals and fun. We will dearly miss her. We love you Leah!
Scuba Diving
Brennen was a natural
Jarom and Brookly liked scuba better than snorkeling
What a fun opportunity the kids had for Oceanography Club! It was a free club their PE teacher did this summer and the last day she taught them to Scuba Dive! Awesome!

Pack Meeting for Jarom's Bear
Awesome awards!
Wes was here to see Jarom before he left for Virginia
Jarom had to find his award
So fun to see Jarom's joy and excitement and I'm glad we were all there to cheer him on:)

2nd Week of Summer-Journey of Faith Begins
This week brought an incredible spiritual experience for Dallin and Josh as they went with our Apache Junction Stake to a Pioneer Trek. They had wonderful Ma and Pa's. Josh had the Doucet's (Tiffany the wife is who I did Preschool with for Ben) and Dallin had the McKinley's (Bro McKinley was just put in the Stake Presidency 2 weeks ago and couldn't be much older than Wes) . What an amazing week! While the boys were gone on Trek Mon-Wed, Wes was in Virginia, Brennen had Aviation Camp, Brookly and Jarom had Oceanography Camp and Ben and I watched Jocie and Harry here at home.
This made for a very busy week! When the boys got home I sat with them in the living room and we talked for a long time about their experiences there. Watching the women pulling the handcarts alone and then seeing the angels come to the resue was very powerful for both the boys. They grew to love the kids in their "families" and had many stories. Dallin had blisters on most of the bottom of his feet. Josh fared better for blisters. Each Ma and Pa said sweet things about the boys when we got to meet them at the Trek fireside the next Sunday. Dallin's said he bonded with their own son and was so good to him they could tell he had younger siblings. His Pa said he was proud of Dallin for not spending his money from the Mormon Battalion and giving everything to their family. Josh's Ma texted me that I have an amazing son. He was helpful and kind and also didn't spend his money.
I anxiously looked forward to Wes's homecoming on Wed night for our Anniversary Getaway Weekend. After he got home the boys and Wes and I stayed up late recapping the Trek for Wes.
Then our weekend began. We had tickets to Les Miserables on Thursday night and the music was wonderful but the sensual innuendos and outright crudeness was enough to make us not see this play again. So sad to ruin such a wonderful message and story.
Mom and Dad Gardner came down and on Thursday to also attend Les Miserables with Vicki and Verle, Rita, who flew in from Texas, Aunt Karen, and Karisa and Eric.
Wes and I enjoyed our time away but spent the entire time praying and making some very important decisions for our family.
During this incredibly busy week some instances were brought to light that made moving our family a real possibility. On Tuesday while Wes was in Virginia we pretty much decided that our family needed to move away from this area. After a long talk with Bishop, after Wes was asleep in Virgin,a, I really felt that our Heavenly Father wanted us to get away as well. I felt an urgency in this new endeavor. I couldn't sleep so I began looking at homes for rent. There were several in the kid's school district and the next morning I called a friend so see what she knew about the area where she lived. On Wednesday-the day the boys and Wes got home-Wes suggested that we try to buy a home if we could work the financing. Definitely inspired counsel. Buying is a cheaper payment than renting for our family. With so many details to begin the process we left on our weekend away and didn't tell the kids what was happening. Dallin saw me looking at houses later and we did tell him then. We went with a realtor that was highly recommended to Wes from a guy at work and on Wed we looked at homes in Mesa. By Thursday we felt guided to look farther away and began looking at Queen Creek area. Each step of this has been a test of faith and miraculous.
So we kept praying and on Saturday we looked at 7 homes and saw things we liked and didn't. The last one we looked at on Oak Road was a great fit for our family! There are some minor things to fix ans work with but it has the big game room upstairs and even a pool so the kids can bring their friends to play. We took pictures and prayed some more and after looking at another house a second time we decided that this one on Oak was perfect for us with all the greenbelt behind our home and at the end of the street. So we put in an offer and waited. In the meantime we tried to look at schools, wards, and other vital details of moving that concern our entire family. We decided to let Dallin finish his Senior year at Skyline but move the rest of the kids. We talked with fmaily about this and found out that dear freinds from early married ward are living on our street! They have a boy Brennen's age, a girl Brooky's age, a boy just younger than Jarom and a sweet Down Syndrome daughter Ben's age. I felt this was a confirmation that this is where we are to be. Wendy Hargrave, my friend on our new street, told us about the ward and the area and we are so excited! She sends her kids to Legacy. We are nervous but going forward with faith that the Lord led us to this area and he'll provide a way for each of our kids to find friends and get into the schools that would be best for them. Legacy Traditional is where we've decided to put the younger 4. It's a K-8 school and after many reviews of friends who have children there we think it's the bet fit for our children as well. However there is a long waiting list for 6th Grade for Brookly. The boys list is shorter and they will most likely get in but we don't know for Brookly. They are talking of adding a classroom for 6th and we are praying this happens so they can all be together next year.
I just feel peace and comfort through this whole process and know that it will be the Lord's will for us whatever happens. Somehow our Ray Lane house will rent and we'll figure out those details. Somehow I'll be able to finish the packing and moving process and all these inspections and loan info with Wes gone. We got Power of Attorney becaue Wes is in Virginia for 2 weeks through the middle of this move. He should be home July 2nd but we are packing more each day and hope to close on June 30th and move the 4th of July! More prayer for the timing as well so we can move before we leave for Utah for Sheppard family reunion or we'd have 1 week until school starts for Josh to move and get settled. We are letting him choose his High School out there but he is leaning towards Queen Creek High or Higley HS. Higley is a little far but we found out that his best friend from younger days is there and they are so excited to have us closer again. Queen Creek starts July 27th. Legacy starts Aug 8th. Josh will miss Scout Camp with our old ward with school starting then. Crazy but things will work out. I feel the blessings and strength that my dad promised me in my last Father's Blessing from him. I was promised health and strength while Wes is gone on travel this year. At the time of the blessing he was only scheduled for Alaska, now he's been to Virginia twice and plans for CA upon return. I truly feel lifted and peace through this process as I turn to the Lord daily pleading for what we need to make this all happen. I wonder if I lean on Wes too much when he's home and the Lord is trying to teach me to come to Him more often. There are many unknows but I don't feel afraid. It's life changing and a huge undertaking to move this crew in so short a time alone but I feel that with the Lord's help it will just work out. We know this is what we are supposed to do and we've learned that life goes smoother when we follow those promptings. I know the Lord loves each of my children and my worries for them with all the changes are addressed by him in little miracles daily as things work out. The kids loved seeing their new school today and are anxious to meet Wendy's kids.
The Home Inspection was today and the inspector said it's a clean home with only minor normal wear and tear. The things found wrong can be fixed and aren't deal breaking. Each day as I don't know what's next things just seem to fall into place.
Last Fast Sunday Ben really wanted to bear his testimony and so I told him he could if he practiced a little with me for a minute. He thought he was ready but wanted me to come up with him. I sat behind him and he started but then forgot. I went up to help him and just aked him what he knows to be true and he finished and he sat down. I felt that was so like in my life when I want to do things on my own buyt I need a little boost and the Lord steps in and helps me finish if I just ask. We have witnessed the power of prayer repeatedly in our home-whether it be a dying fish who miraculously lives, a printer that's broken to work one last time, keys to be found, or the skies to open so Wes could come home on time- there is no denying the power of the Lord in our lives. I know He's aware of me and my needs and I feel Him guiding this whole experience. I always say each day is an adventure around here! We've had different reactions and we can't really discuss all the details with too many people so it's hard to see others struggling with why we are leaving when our ward needs us so desperately. Our kids cried and had a hard time at first but seem to be accepting the Lord's will now. I told them to pray for their own answer and to find peace and find friends and happiness in our new area. Our last Pack Meeting was emotional for me to see Jarom get his Bear and 3 arrow points and noone mentioned we would be gone. I am sad to leave good Young Men leaders who have influenced our boys and those we love but I just feel such comfort in the good people we've already reconnected with down there.

Small Miracles
Today we've had a couple of small miracles that I wanted to record. We've been praying that
Wes could get out of Alaska today with the fog so thick that planes can't land. this morning at 8:15am we got a text from Wes that the skies didn't look too promising for flight today. On the way to take Josh to school, as we left for carpool at 8:38am we stopped and said a specific prayer that the skies would be open enough for him to get out and make it home today. 2 minutes later when we pulled up to get the girl we give a ride to, we got a text from Wes that the plane was able to land and that if all went well he'd be on the return flight out soon. We said a quick thank you prayer. There were a couple of wonderful things about this...yes that Wes would be home today, but the smile that came across Josh's face when we read the text and he knew our prayer had been answered was priceless. Small moments. Simple prayer. Precious memory.
Another blessing today was a moment of quiet to sit and read while Ben and Jocie were in the sandbox and Harrison was asleep. I'm reading Hilary Weeks "Bedtime and Naptime" and I absolutely love it! It's her stories that she shares at Women's Conference, her amazing recipes, (love the cheese ball and creamcheese chicken) and funny quips and quotes that inspire. It was nice to ponder the joy of my children before the storm of them all home at 2:15pm today for the summer:)

Last week of school!!
In the meantime we had a Little League Championship game for Jarom. While his team took 2nd place we felt he was a winner because of his determination and cheerful attitude throughout the season. He was a great encourager and he enjoyed playing. The kids and I went Tues. night to watch him and the other team literally had about a hundred people there to cheer and they were all in their red shirts. I had on my Gardner Fightin Irish shirt:) The other team, Red Raiders, had been having 4 hours of practice at a time as compared to our Fightin Irish practices of 1 1/2 hours. Jarom learned some good basic skills and we'll see if he wants to continue next year. He was so fun to watch out there with his ready stance and he caught a few great pop flys in outfield.
Jarom's LLtrophy
Tired and windblown we had fun supporting our Jarom!
Ben really didn't want a picture and was tired and ready to go to bed.
Jarom's awards from class. Mrs. Hall had a difficult time choosing which one to give Jarom since she said he could have had at least 12 different awards. The paper on the right is a list of the nice things people in his class said about him and the award is for being a Bookworm and reading 158,527 words this year. He was in ELP which is the accelerated learning program for Mesa schools and he had a great year being the top of his class in almost every subject.
In all the excitement, on Tues night Jarom also pulled out his own tooth so the toothfairy had to visit. It's the bottom right looking at this picture but hard to see.
Today was an emotional day for me. It is the official last day of Ben and I home alone. I began to analyze the time we spent this year and felt guilty for all the things we didn't do and then I remembered the blessing that Preschool twice a week and extra fieldtrips together was for us. Amidst the hours of Netflix for Ben and the hundreds of appointments he was drug along to, was the fun and learning that I had hoped could happen together this year. We had so many fun memories together and lots of pictures to prove it.
So today I asked Ben what he wanted to do after we went to Walmart for Josh new shoes and the promised doughnut for Ben for breakfast since he woke up late and was soaked and needed a quick bath before carpool so no time for breakfast... come on, admit you've been there too. So he told me he wanted to go to the park. We went to the park and after an hour in the sun and getting a bit sunburned I suggested we end at McDonald's for lunch. We went to McDonald's and he got his Happy Meal and played for a while as I actually fell asleep in the stall. He loved it! While at the swings I told him I would really miss him next year. He quickly said, "You're going to have fun by yourself." I asked him what I was going to do and he said I could do puzzles. Funny boy! I'll do puzzles in his classroom helping I'm sure. I do have a ToDo list that outnumbers days in a year but I may just take some much needed naps and catch up on scrapbooking, blogging, etc for a while. We have a long summer of all of them home so we'll see what happens. Tomorrow is the golden last day! I will have my friend's kids to babysit so today was my last alone day with Ben. I've been babysitting her 2 kids during the week for the last month to help her until her babysitter get out of school. Boy do I realize how free I am without such a little one anymore. What a difference between my "baby" Ben and this 2 year old! I realize how big he is and how fast they grow.
Along with the emotions of losing my baby to Kindergarten came the news that our neighbor's son passed away. Pete Bonnett. He was 25. Her 9 year old who's a dear friend of Jarom's found his brother Sunday morning and thought he was asleep. Wow. It made me hug each child a little tighter and remember why it's all worth it.
We also got a wedding announcement today for my cousin.
And news that our dear friend and neighbor Leah Pittman has sold her house and will be moving in 2 weeks. She has become an adopted Grandma since her husband passed away and we frequently have her to dinner and part of our family events and love her.
Also got a call from Mom Sheppard that one of the family reunion days in July we have to be seen in a swimsuit...now that's motivation to get back on the diet:)
So there's always a lot going on in the adventures of the Gardner household. Many more things happen in a day but I'm the alarm clock for tomorrow and I've got to get to bed after falling asleep in public today. That's another thing I've got to get checked out. Wes has a CPAP machine now and seems to be adjusting to better sleep but mine is getting worse and our sweet Jarom having nightmares and coming in every night around 3am to sleep in our room makes it difficult to rest well. Ben and Brookly are in my bed tonight to start with Wes gone and Jarom will come in later I'm sure. I just am too light of a sleeper.
I did take a peek at some summer reading I'd like to do. The 3rd of the Hourglass Door series is coming out and I'd like to start Beyonders and Fablehaven and several of my new spiritual books.:) I love the library to get these!

Wes travel and Brooky Math
I wanted to just write down a few other things happening. While I was at the talent show on Friday morning I got an urgent text from Wes saying he had to let the guys at work know by noon if he could travel for most of June. He'll be gone this week Mon-Thurs in Alaska with his final long Alaska trip yet to come. Now he'll have to turn around and be gone most of June to help support the launch in Virginia. Not as far away but more time away is always difficult. Interesting how we are blessed that it is not on our Anniversary weekend in June and he should be home before the Sheppard Family Reunion in July. Little miracles all the time. I will definitely need the strength promised in my blessing from Dad.
Brookly tested into 7th grade Pre-Algebra. She is the only one as a 5th grader this year to test so high and be chosen to go to the Jr. High to take it as a 6th grader next year. She was then recommended by her teacher and Principal to the Jr. High for this course. We'd have to transport her to the Jr. High and back each day. We were excited about this and talked with her about it and what she'd like to do and had pretty much decided it would be a good thing until we read the parent letter. This is basically 2 years ahead of other students in her grade. Our other boys took the advanced Math that put them a year ahead and we know the struggles that gave Dallin by his Senior year. Oh, she meets all the requirements and such for the accelerated program but the require you to make a commitment for 6 years of study in advanced Math and through the rest of the requirements we read that she may have to be transported to college and possilby pay tuition for her Senior Math for BC Calculus as it is not presently offered in all the high schools. Well, she does want to be a pediatrician but this was outrageous! We thought it would help her develop her other talents of Orchestra and Choir by freeing up an elective later in High School since we require Seminary, but instead it requires intense Math study all through. Not quite what we thought for her. So we declined the offer and now we keep getting teachers and Principal Secretary and others who are congratulating her and tryinbg to work it out for her but we really don't want to do it. She wants to enjoy her High School years and already with so many required classes and Seminary a no credit elective it's hard to fit in paying for an A Hour to graduate. Crazy!! She has so many gifts it's hard to help her balance and figure out what she really wants when she's in 5th grade! So... we just wanted to share our brag with you because that's what family is for right, that she was chosen, but she's not going to do it:) It's hard to get excited with anyone else who didn't get this chance:)

Father-Sons
Here's part of who went...
This is Wes and our boys but Grandpa Gardner met them up there
and Wes also took up Bro Hudson and his 2 boys as a service.
Wes said it is just too stressful and busy to get lots of pictures there so I'm grateful for these:)
Always an adventure: they had a tire go flat on the way up from a sharp rock and it took them a lot longer to get there than planned. Grandpa always comes stocked with lots of yummy food to take care of them though. Chicken fried steak, potato chips, homemade bean dip, rootbeer, milk, his homemade hot cocoa...always too much fun with Grandpa.
The machine gun stick Brennen enjoyed.
Dallin pondering the meaning of life
Josh in the wash
While the boys are away the girls will play and we usually have Girls Night Out on this Friday that they are gone. This year Brookly had a birthday party she felt she needed to be at to support her friend so I wandered Hobby Lobby alone until they kicked me out at 8. Then I grabbed Wendy's and watched Cosby Show until time to get Brooky.
We made Saturday our Girls Day however. We went shopping with her birthday money and she got darling clothes at Kohls and a fun jewelry making kit and game at Walmart. We hit Bahama Bucks for a Strawbery Daquiri Cream shaved ice and topped it off with a date with Wes that evening at Golden Canyon, our favorite Chinese restaurant with famous hot and sour soup and delicious Lemon chicken and Mongolian beef. We grabbed Brookly's free Coldstone on the way home. We shopped til we dropped:) What a fun birthday week for Brookly!
